Does Masturbation Lower Testosterone Levels?

does masturbation lower testosterone

One of the most debated arguments between men that has been discussed for years is the question of whether masturbation lowers testosterone levels

Many great men such as Muhammad Ali, Napoleon Bonaparte, Oscar Wilde and George Washington have sworn by abstaining from ejaculation to use this sexual energy as fuel for other areas of life.

In this post, I am going to look at the research and studies to try to answer this important question.

Does Ejaculation Lower Testosterone Levels?

Here is some research on the effects of ejaculation on testosterone levels.

  • In this study, 28 willing volunteers abstained from ejaculation and results showed that the first 6 days did not have any impact on testosterone levels. However, on the 7th-day testosterone levels peaked 145% over baseline. On the 8th day levels of testosterone dropped rapidly. To see this study click here.
  • In this study, it was observed that just the anticipation of sex resulted in a boost in testosterone levels. To see this study click here.
  • In these two studies, it was shown that ejaculation does not have a significant effect on plasma testosterone levels. To see these studies click here and here.
  • In a study involving rodents, it was found that after multiple ejaculations there was a marked increase in estrogen receptors, and remember that estrogen is something we want to keep low. To see this study click here.

  • Lastly, in this study, it was shown that lack of sex leads to lower testosterone levels. To see this study click here.

Zinc and Masturbation

Zinc is a very important mineral for men and is often called the sex mineral. Zinc levels in the body can impact fertility, testosterone levels, and your sex drive.

One thing to keep in mind when asking the question of whether masturbation lowers testosterone levels is that during an ejaculation a man can lose up to 5mg of Zinc which is about half of the daily requirement of Zinc.

This shows that excessive masturbation will have a negative impact on your zinc levels, which in turn can lower testosterone and libido.

Here are some studies on zinc and testosterone.

  • This study involved 37 infertile men who were given 60mg of Zinc each day for a period spanning 6 weeks. From the group 22 significantly increased their testosterone and sperm count and nine wife’s of the 22 participants had become pregnant during this study. To see this study click here.
  • This article sheds some light on the vitamins contained in sperm, in the article Michael Colgan reports that the requirements for Zinc go up by 5mg after each ejaculation. To see this article click here.
  • This 1996 study from the Wayne State University School of Medicine found that men fed a diet low in Zinc for 20 weeks experienced a 25% reduction in testosterone. However, older men experienced a doubling of their testosterone levels after Zinc supplementation for 6 months. To read this study click here.

Sexual Transmutation and Testosterone

As discussed at that start of this article there have been many great men who have harnessed the power in sexual energy to achieve great things in life.

The reason for this is because as you naturally increase testosterone levels you will find that you have more motivation and energy in all areas of your life.

And with this rise in testosterone, you will also experience a big rise in libido and sexual energy. Some men will use this extra energy and channel it into some useful avenues and achieve success whilst other men will waste this energy in excessive masturbation and porn.

If you do spend a lot of time watching porn you might want to watch this video by Gary Wilson showing how excessive porn can result in physical changes in the brain that can lead to erectile dysfunction.

The energy is the same but how it is being used and channeled is totally different. The key is that when you naturally increase your testosterone levels you can then utilize this new found energy and confidence and pursue a goal that is important to you.

For men with Low-T, the habit of excessive masturbation and ejaculation can really hurt you hormonally. This is because a man with Low Testosterone needs to avoid the loss of zinc from excessive ejaculation and avoid the increase in estrogen receptors that follows multiple ejaculations discussed above.

A better option is to practice the art of male edging and sex without ejaculation, this will achieve the stimulation of sexual hormones and also allow you to last much longer in sex.

A great book that explains this technique and also how to become Multi Orgasmic is from the author Mantak Chia.

Combine this technique with the correct diet, exercise, and sleep and you will soon see your testosterone levels rising.

When testosterone levels are very high the need to limit your ejaculations is not as crucial as when testosterone levels are low but moderation is still the best option.

Conclusion

The question of whether masturbation lower testosterone levels is, in my opinion, an understudied topic but still a very important subject for men.

But what we can draw from all the studies and evidence above is this:

  • Abstaining from ejaculation in the short term can result in an increase in testosterone.
  • Abstaining from ejaculation for longer periods can lower testosterone.
  • Excessive ejaculation can have a negative impact on Zinc Levels, and also can increase estrogen receptors in the body.
  • Men with low testosterone should try to avoid excessive ejaculation until testosterone levels improve.

From this research, we can conclude that abstaining from ejaculation for too long is not good for a man hormonally, and excessive ejaculation is also not good for a man hormonally. So with all the evidence out there, it looks like moderation really is the best option.
